Protecting Your Credit

At Bank of Cushing, the financial well-being of our customers is always first on our minds. By taking some simple precautions, you can minimize your risk of becoming a victim of identity theft.

To Prevent Identity Theft...

  • Do not give out personal information over the phone, through the mail, or over the Internet unless you know the organization. (That includes e-mail!) Use only secure web sites if you enter a credit card number.
  • Guard your mail from theft. Deposit outgoing mail in post office collection boxes or at your local post office. Promptly remove mail from your mailbox after it has been delivered, and be sure to have your mail held by the post office if you plan to be away for a long period of time.
  • Store all personal information in a safe place, and protect all passwords and PINs. Do not write down your PINs, and do not keep them in your wallet.
  • Before throwing them away, shred all credit and debit card receipts and monthly statements, along with anything containing your Social Security Number or personal information.
  • Cancel all unused credit cards and bank accounts. To do this, contact your bank or credit card holders and ask them to close the specified accounts. You may request that the closures be sent to you in writing, for file-keeping purposes. In addition, ask your credit card holders if they will be contacting the three credit bureaus with the closure information. In most cases, they will do it for you, but if not, it is important to call them yourself.
  • Verify all charges and purchases made with a credit or debit card on your monthly statements.
  • Never keep your Social Security Number in your wallet or on your checks, and only give it out when absolutely necessary.

If you feel identity theft has already occurred ...

  • First - contact the fraud departments at each of the three major credit bureaus.
  • Second - contact the security departments at all of the creditors for any accounts that have been fraudulently accessed or opened.
  • Third - file a report with your local police or the police where the identity theft took place.
